1961 Austin Mini
This is an early RHD Austin Mini. A 1961 example, this example has the purity and simplicity of the early cars that is missing from later cars. It is a right hand drive example that has been restored, and runs and drives extremely well.
This car is in Pleasant Hill, CA
The Model
Introduced in 1959, the original Mini is widely regarded to be one of the most important and influential cars of the 20th century. With its front engine front wheel drive layout, the packaging was very efficient and economical, and established the pattern for small cars that is still the standard. Additionally, the car is as important for cultural reasons as it is for its automotive relevance. The cars are inseparable from the image of the swinging 60’s, and were and remain popular among the average person, stars, and even among motorsports enthusiasts thanks to the fine handling and small dimensions.
History
This particular example is an early right hand drive example, which retains the purity and simplicity of the early cars. It was restored about ten years ago, and has a number of accessories such as Rokee wooden dashboard (the original supplier of wood Mini dashboards). As a deluxe model, this example has three instruments: the central speedometer/fuel gauge, as well as oil pressure and voltmeter gauges. The car also has a wood-rimmed steering wheel made by Mountney, another period supplier of Mini accessories. The car also has 12” Minilite style wheels and Talbot style side mirrors. The car was repainted some years ago, and was stripped to bare metal and repainted with etching primer, primer, sealer, and several coats of blue metallic paint. The roof was painted white and finished with a Union Jack. The interior received new carpet at the time of the restoration, as well as new seats from a later Mini.
Condition
The car is in very nice condition overall. The body is in good shape, though there is some corrosion in the bottom of the right door, and on the sills. The remainder of the body appears to be rust-free. The paintwork is attractive and makes a strong presentation, though there are some signs of aging and a few blemishes. Overall, the car makes a strong impression thanks to its attractive blue color, Minilite style wheels, and Union Jack on the roof. The glass is in good shape, as are the wheels, though the tires are older.
The interior is in good shape. The upholstery, headliner and carpets are all excellent. The dashboard is fundamentally sound, though the finish on the veneer is aging in places. The speedometer is unrestored and is very good considering this, while the oil pressure and volt meter gauges are new. The engine and trunk are tidy but unrestored.
